The First Footing Box
First-footing is an ancient tradition in Scotland where the first person to cross a home's threshold after midnight on New Year's Day sets the luck for the household for the coming year. Traditionally, good fortune belongs to a household if the first visitor is a tall, dark-haired man. Historical folklore traces this preference back to the Viking era, when a fair-haired stranger at the door often meant a Viking raider and trouble.
Symbolic first footing gifts often included shortbread, black bun or bread for food and sustenance, which is what we have used to base our first footing box on.
You might not be able to visit in person, but sending this gift is a beautiful way to keep our culture alive.
